Secure Your Assets. The Right Way.

Welcome to the official setup guide. Follow these essential steps to initialize your Ledger hardware wallet and take full control of your digital security. **Never** share your 24-word recovery phrase.

Your Step-by-Step Security Journey

1

Phase I: Unboxing & Device Integrity Check

Before proceeding, inspect your device packaging. This is a critical first step to ensure your security has not been compromised.

  • Check the physical box seals for any signs of tampering, tears, or prior opening.
  • Confirm the device is in pristine condition. There should be no scratches or signs of use.
  • The 24-word recovery sheet must be blank, included in the box, and **not** pre-written or provided digitally.
  • Use only the cable provided in the official box. Connect your device to your computer via USB.
  • The device screen should display "Welcome" or "Press both buttons to begin."
SECURITY ALERT: If you find any sign of tampering or a pre-written recovery phrase, **DO NOT** use the device. Contact Ledger support immediately.

Phase II: Establishing Your Personal Access PIN

Your PIN code is the access key to your device. It protects your private keys from physical theft.

PIN Best Practices:
  1. Choose a PIN between 4 and 8 digits.
  2. **Avoid** simple patterns (1234, 1111) or personal dates (birthdays, anniversaries).
  3. Use the device buttons to select each digit, pressing both buttons to confirm the digit.
  4. Write the PIN down *separately* from your recovery phrase.
Device Interaction:
  • Left button: Decrements the number.
  • Right button: Increments the number.
  • Both buttons: Confirms the selected number or action.
3

Phase III: The 24-Word Recovery Phrase (Seed) - The Master Key

This is the most critical step. Your 24-word phrase is the only backup of your private keys.

The device will display 24 sequential words. You **must** copy these words exactly onto the provided blank recovery sheet. They must be spelled and ordered perfectly.

Absolute Security Rules for the Seed:
  • Never photograph, digitize, or store your phrase on a computer, phone, or cloud service.
  • Never type it into a wallet, website, or software application unless you are explicitly restoring your device.
  • Store your physical copy in a secure, fireproof, and waterproof location, separated from the device itself.

Once you have meticulously recorded all 24 words, the Ledger device will ask you to confirm a selection of words to verify your transcription accuracy. Only when the device confirms the phrase is correct can you be certain your backup is safe.

4

Phase IV: Ledger Live & Initializing Software

Ledger Live is the mandatory application for managing your accounts, installing coin applications, and performing firmware updates.

Download Verification:

Download Ledger Live **only** from the official Ledger website. Avoid third-party links or app store searches that may lead to malicious clones.

Once installed, open the application and choose the **"Initialize a new Ledger device"** option to connect it to the software.

Genuine Check (Mandatory):

Ledger Live will automatically perform a "Genuine Check" on your device. This cryptographic verification ensures that your Ledger device is authentic and running the original, certified firmware from Ledger. **Do not proceed if this check fails.**

5

Phase V: Managing Firmware and Coin Applications

The Ledger device's operating system (firmware) must be kept up-to-date for optimal security.

Firmware Updates:
  • Always perform updates directly through Ledger Live.
  • Follow the on-screen prompts precisely, especially the checks on the device screen itself.
  • Updates are signed cryptographically by Ledger, ensuring authenticity.
Coin Applications:

Each cryptocurrency (e.g., Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana) requires a small dedicated application installed on your Ledger device. Use the "Manager" section in Ledger Live to install the apps you need. Note that the available storage is limited, so only install the necessary apps. Uninstalling an app **does not** affect your assets, as your assets are secured by the 24-word phrase, not the application itself.

6

Phase VI: Generating Your First Secure Address

The security of your first received transaction is paramount.

In Ledger Live, select the account, click "Receive," and follow the prompts. Ledger Live will request that you connect and unlock your device and open the corresponding crypto app (e.g., the Bitcoin app).

CRITICAL ADDRESS VERIFICATION:

The receiving address generated by Ledger Live will be displayed simultaneously on the Ledger Live screen and on your Ledger device's secure screen. You **MUST** manually compare and confirm that the address shown on your computer screen perfectly matches the address shown on your device screen. Only a device-verified address ensures that you are sending funds to a secure address generated by your Ledger's private keys, mitigating man-in-the-middle attacks.

Phase VII: Ongoing Security & Maintenance

Security is a continuous practice. Remember these principles as you continue your journey.

Backup Management
Ensure you have multiple, geographically separated, physical backups of your 24-word phrase (e.g., a metal backup solution). **Never** store them in the same place as your device.
Transaction Verification
Always verify the recipient address, transaction amount, and network fees on the Ledger device screen before pressing both buttons to sign the transaction. **Trust the device screen above all else.**
Phishing Awareness
Ledger will **never** ask you for your 24-word recovery phrase for any reason (support, validation, staking). Any prompt asking for it is a scam.
Firmware Discipline
Check for and apply firmware and Ledger Live updates regularly to benefit from the latest security enhancements and features.
